Orthodox Churches in Los Angeles, California

In Los Angeles, Russian immigrants who fled the revolution held the first liturgy of the parish now called Holy Virgin Mary Orthodox Cathedral in February 1923 and consecrated their church on Micheltorena Street in 1928. The Romanian parish of Holy Trinity was founded in 1926, and a Ukrainian parish adjacent to Hollywood says it was founded in the 1920s by Ukrainians fleeing the Bolsheviks. An Antiochian community founded in 1933 was succeeded in 1950 by St. Nicholas, which became the cathedral of the Antiochian archdiocese's Western Region in 1964.

St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, built by Hollywood cinema executive Charles Skouras to fulfill a vow, was completed in 1952 in the Pico district, then an ethnically Greek area. Spanish has since joined Greek and English in its services. At Holy Virgin Mary, regular English services began in the 1960s and Sunday services now use Church Slavonic and English. The parish reports that many people seeking the faith become catechumens each year.
