Orthodox Churches in San Francisco, California

Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral on Green Street traces its history to December 2, 1857, when the first Orthodox society was founded in San Francisco, and the Orthodox Church in America calls it the first Orthodox parish in the contiguous United States. The parish has been a cathedral since 1872, when the bishop of the Aleutian Islands and Alaska moved his headquarters to the city, and its multiethnic congregation worships in English. The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia formed its original San Francisco parish in 1927. Holy Virgin Cathedral in the Richmond District was completed under Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco, who is buried there.

Greek immigrants founded Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in 1904; in 1921 some of its parishioners formed St. Sophia, which became Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Annunciation is the cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco. St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Cathedral dates from 1954, and Saint Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, now in Diamond Heights, was incorporated in 1938.
