Orthodox Churches in Miami, Florida

Greek immigrants organized the Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Community in Miami between 1925 and 1927. The cornerstone of its Byzantine-style church was laid in 1948, and Archbishop Iakovos consecrated Saint Sophia Cathedral in 1973. Another Greek congregation began in 1971 as the South Dade Hellenic Community Center, bought property in Kendall in 1978, and took the name St. Andrew in 1980.

Russian refugees from the 1917 revolution and the postwar years began regular services in 1947 in a tent on donated land in what was then the uninhabited western part of Miami; St. Vladimir Church, now on NW 46th Avenue, was consecrated in 1948. A small group established a Serbian Orthodox mission in 1978, meeting initially in private homes; it became a parish in the early 1980s and is now St. Simeon Cathedral. Saint Sophia reports many bicultural families, including Greek, Hispanic, Russian, Serbian, Romanian and Bulgarian. Misión Apostólica de Cristo is a Spanish-language mission of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad.
