Orthodox Christianity in Chicago
Orthodox worship in Chicago began in the late 1800s among immigrants mainly from Greece, Serbia and Austria-Hungary, who met in warehouses and house chapels on the Near North Side. Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral was established in 1892 by emigrants from Laconia and the Greek islands. In 1905 Serbs in Wicker Park founded a church, Holy Resurrection, which briefly served as the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North America.
Early Romanian immigrants settled in relatively compact North Side neighborhoods. Saint Mary Romanian Orthodox Church was organized in 1911, and its first building, at 1345 West Webster, was consecrated in 1915; Holy Nativity, the city's second Romanian Orthodox church, followed in 1939. A small group of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians began worshiping together in 1916, the beginning of St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. A 2017 pan-Orthodox service marking 125 years of Orthodoxy in Chicago drew Greek, Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Albanian, Arabic and American Orthodox Christians.
