Orthodox Churches in Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore's first Orthodox church, a Greek congregation named for St. John the Baptist, formed in late 1893 and disbanded by early 1894 for lack of support. The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation began as a parish established in 1906, moved in 1937 to a vacant Protestant church on Preston Street, and became Maryland's Greek Orthodox cathedral in 1975. From 1940 to the early 1950s, Greek families concentrated in Highlandtown, in southeastern Baltimore, a factor in the creation of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which Annunciation clergy and laity helped establish.

Immigrants from parts of the Russian Empire now in Ukraine and Belarus founded Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in 1919, and its first members lived in the Washington Hill neighborhood. St. Andrew Orthodox Church, founded in 1940 by 30 families within the Metropolia (now the Orthodox Church in America), is in East Baltimore's Butchers Hill. Recent immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Serbia and Romania have since joined Holy Trinity.
