Orthodox Churches in Minneapolis, Minnesota

St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral in Northeast Minneapolis began in 1887 as an Eastern-rite Catholic parish of Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the Roman Catholic archbishop John Ireland rejected the credentials of its pastor, Alexis Toth, because he had been married, the parish was received into the Russian Orthodox Church between 1891 and 1892. Its brick church, modeled on a cathedral in Omsk, Siberia, opened in 1906, and the parish was raised to cathedral status in 1971.

Elsewhere in Minneapolis, St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church dates to 1900 and has worshiped on the eastern shore of Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun) since 1957. Ukrainians in Northeast Minneapolis founded St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1925, and St. Panteleimon Russian Orthodox Church marked its 60th anniversary in 2016. St. Herman's Orthodox Church began in 1976 as an English-language mission of the Orthodox Church in America and bought a former Lutheran church in South Minneapolis in 1992.
