Orthodox Christianity in Pittsburgh
Orthodox life in Pittsburgh grew with the steel mills and mines of the late 1800s, which drew immigrants from Eastern Europe and the Arab world. St. Alexander Nevsky, founded in 1891 in Woods Run on the North Side, was the first Orthodox parish in Western Pennsylvania and served nearly a dozen ethnicities. Serbs organized a church in 1905 that consolidated with another Serbian parish in 1961 to form Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Cathedral. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral began in 1906 as the city's first Greek parish. Orthodox immigrants from Syria and Lebanon received their own pastor in 1908 and consecrated St. George Church in 1917.
St. George moved to Oakland in the 1950s and became a cathedral in 2005. St. Alexander Nevsky moved to Allison Park in 1972 and became the archdiocesan cathedral in 1981. St. Moses the Black, a multiracial congregation in the Hill District, illustrates a small but growing group of Black American converts, according to its priest.
