Orthodox Christianity in Detroit

Ss. Peter and Paul was organized in southwest Detroit in November 1907 by families from Galicia, the Carpatho-Rusyn homeland. Its parish history calls it Michigan's first Orthodox congregation, and it became a cathedral in 2000. The parish now runs a mission center serving a Sunday meal to the community. Greek immigrants, primarily from the Sparta region, began settling in Detroit in 1880. Their parish was chartered in 1910 and built a church on Macomb Street in Greektown in 1913. It became Annunciation Cathedral in 1962 and moved to East Lafayette Street in 1968.

Russian immigrants founded Holy Trinity in north Detroit in 1915. It added English services beside Slavonic ones and in 1959 opened a new church on East Eight Mile Road. Detroit's Serbs attended Russian Orthodox services until Rev. Dusan Trbuhovich arrived in January 1915 to organize a Serbian parish. Its first church was consecrated in 1934 and its successor, St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral (Ravanica), in 1967.
