Orthodox Christianity in Michigan

Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Cathedral in southwest Detroit began in November 1907 as a parish of families from Galicia, the Carpatho-Rusyn homeland, under the Russian Metropolia, and it describes itself as the oldest Orthodox church in Michigan. The first Greek immigrants settled in Detroit in 1880; their parish, chartered in 1910, became Annunciation Cathedral in 1962. St. George Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Southfield, founded as a parish in 1912, belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, established as a diocese at a church congress in Detroit in 1929. The Episcopate's diocesan center, Vatra Romaneasca, is in Jackson. St. Lazarus Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, known as Ravanica, dates its parish to 1915; until then Detroit's Serbs had attended the Russian church.

Later waves followed: some 350 Serbs interned during World War II arrived between 1947 and 1954, and Macedonian emigrants began arriving in the Detroit area in large numbers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Greek, Romanian, Antiochian, Orthodox Church in America and Serbian parishes are prominent today, alongside smaller Bulgarian, Macedonian, Ukrainian, Albanian and Russian communities. Parishes concentrate in metropolitan Detroit, including suburbs such as Troy and Farmington Hills, and in Grand Rapids.

Monastic communities include Holy Trinity Monastery at Smiths Creek, under the Greek Archdiocese, and Romanian monasteries at Clinton and Allegan. In the Upper Peninsula's Copper Country, where Finnish heritage dates to settlers who came in 1865 to work the mines, the Atlantic Mine parish of Saints Sergius and Herman of Valaam took part in the 2013 Finnfest.
