Orthodox Christianity in Las Vegas

Greek immigrants began settling in the Las Vegas Valley in the early 1900s. They held informal observances in homes, but baptisms required travel to Salt Lake City or Los Angeles. After a 1954 baptism, Bishop Athenagoras suggested that local women form a Philoptochos chapter, and the congregation was incorporated on April 9, 1959. As St. John the Baptist, it met in an Episcopal church, bought a former synagogue in 1961, and opened its present church on South El Camino Road in 1992. By 2009 St. John's also served members of Russian, Romanian and other Orthodox communities across the valley.

St. Paul the Apostle began in 1988 as an English-language mission of the Orthodox Church in America, founded by Archimandrite Nikolai (Soraich). Its Annie Oakley Drive church was consecrated in 1995, and the parish describes many converts alongside large Russian, Eritrean and Ethiopian groups. Bishop Nikolai (Soraich) and the All Saints Russian Orthodox Church community moved into a new facility, blessed on February 19, 2017.
