Orthodox Churches in Nevada

A survey of first Orthodox parishes by state lists a Greek parish begun in 1910 in a White Pine County mining town as Nevada's first. Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Reno says Eastern Orthodox Christians have been in northern Nevada since the late 1800s, coming to work in the copper mining industry. Around 1960 the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association bought land in southwest Reno and gave it to establish a Greek Orthodox community.

In Las Vegas, Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church traces the city's Greek community to 1931, when Las Vegas was still a small desert railroad town. Hoover Dam, the Strip and World War II industries brought rapid population growth, and the Eastern Orthodox Community was incorporated in Nevada in 1959. In the 1960s the parish bought and renovated an old downtown synagogue as its first permanent church, and in 1992 it opened a Byzantine-inspired church.

Parishes today cluster in greater Las Vegas, where St. Paul the Apostle Orthodox Church belongs to the Orthodox Church in America and All Saints Russian Orthodox Church to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. In Carson City, a 2020 post on the website of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Western America described St. Sebastian Serbian Orthodox Church as a mission parish. The church's priest, who signed the post, wrote that the northern Nevada community he serves began with American converts received into the Serbian Orthodox Church in 2001 and included Serbian, Russian, Romanian, Greek, Korean, Ukrainian and Arabic-speaking Orthodox Christians.
