Orthodox Christianity in Astoria

In 1927 Greek immigrants chartered the Hellenic Orthodox Community of Astoria, St. Demetrios, whose present church on 30th Drive opened in 1942. After the 1965 Immigration Act, tens of thousands of Greeks, many from Cyprus, arrived in the United States, and Astoria became the hub of Greek-American life in the New York area. The community's Sts. Catherine and George Church was consecrated in 1975, and St. Demetrios was elevated to cathedral rank for Queens and Long Island in 1985.

On 23rd Avenue, the Sacred Patriarchal and Stavropegial Orthodox Monastery of St. Irene Chrysovalantou is under the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Russian immigrants formed the parish now known as Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church in 1915; in 1927 it followed Bishop Apollinary into the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. A 2007 report noted that the Greek-American population had declined from a 1970s peak while other immigrant groups and young professionals moved in, though Greek restaurants, shops, churches and clubs preserved the neighborhood's Greek character.
