Orthodox Christianity in Flushing

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, on Clintonville Street in Whitestone, was founded in 1916 as a parish of the Russian Church's North American Missionary Archdiocese. Its founders were almost all of Russian, Galician, Carpatho-Russian or Ukrainian origin; its congregation now includes Greeks, Georgians, Latin Americans and converts from other denominations. Annunciation Russian Orthodox Church was founded in 1951 in Corona by Russians living in several Queens neighborhoods. After the parish divided, one group of parishioners bought an outbuilding in Flushing and held services there until 1970. That year the parish bought its present church on 147th Street, also in Flushing. German Lutherans had built the church in 1895.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Shrine Church in Flushing was established in 1955. On December 5, 1972, relics of St. Nicholas from Bari, Italy, were enshrined there, and Archbishop Iakovos raised the parish to Shrine Church status.
