Orthodox Christianity in Brooklyn
St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral dates to 1895, when Raphael Hawaweeny set up a chapel in Manhattan for Arabic-speaking Orthodox Christians. The congregation moved to Brooklyn in 1902, and in 1904 Raphael became Bishop of Brooklyn with St. Nicholas as his cathedral. Since 1920 it has occupied a former Episcopal church in Boerum Hill. Greeks organized a community in 1913; its Schermerhorn Street church, Sts. Constantine and Helen, became a cathedral in 1966.
Immigrants from Austro-Hungarian Galicia settled in Williamsburg and Greenpoint and founded a parish in 1908. Its church, consecrated in 1922 and now the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, is modeled on the Dormition Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. In 1961 Ukrainian immigrants bought a former bank building on South 5th Street, now Holy Trinity Cathedral. In southern Brooklyn, St. John the Forerunner Cathedral, founded in 2009, conducts missionary work with newly arrived Russian-speaking immigrants, and its congregation includes Ukrainians, Belarusians, Georgians and Moldovans.
