Orthodox Christianity in Cleveland
Cleveland's first Orthodox parish, St. Theodosius, was organized in 1896 by Carpatho-Russian immigrants in Tremont; its cathedral, begun in 1911, has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Greek immigrants founded Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, the city's first Greek Orthodox church, in the early 1910s, and its building at West 14th Street and Fairfield Avenue came into use in 1919. Syrians formed the society behind St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in 1911, and Belarusians who arrived after World War II founded the Mother of God of Zyrovicy parish in the Tremont area in the early 1950s.
As parishioners moved to the suburbs, Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral was built in Cleveland Heights in 1956, and the Serbian parish of St. Sava moved from East 36th Street to Parma in 1965. Albanian immigrants established a society in 1938 and completed a church in 1965. St. Theodosius added English to its Slavonic liturgy in the late 1950s.
