Orthodox Christianity in Ohio

The first Orthodox parish in Ohio, according to a state-by-state survey, was a Russian congregation founded in Cleveland in 1896. That parish, St. Theodosius, was organized by Carpatho-Russian immigrants who had worshipped at a Uniate church; its cathedral, begun in 1911, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Between 1880 and 1924, Orthodox immigrants from Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Near East settled in Cleveland and formed parishes tied to their homelands' churches. Romanians organized a Cleveland parish in 1904, reportedly the first Romanian Orthodox parish in America. Greek immigrants came to the Youngstown area in the early 1900s, drawn by the jobs its steel mills offered, and many from the Aegean islands of Simi and Kalymnos settled in Campbell.

Cathedrals in Greater Cleveland include St. Sava Serbian, St. Sergius Russian and St. Vladimir Ukrainian in Parma, Annunciation Romanian in Olmsted Township, and Zyrovicy Mother of God Belarusian. St. Vladimir completed a Cleveland church in 1933 and, as parishioners moved to the suburbs, a new one in Parma in 1966. Elsewhere in Ohio, cathedrals include Annunciation Greek in Columbus and Holy Trinity Greek and St. George Antiochian in Toledo, where St. George's Syrian and Lebanese founders built a church in 1919.

The Entrance of the Theotokos Skete, a women's monastery between Cleveland and Columbus, was established in 2001 under the Greek Archdiocese's Metropolis of Pittsburgh. Pilgrims and supporters gather for its feast day with the brotherhood of the nearby St. Gregory Palamas Monastery.
