Greek immigrants were living in Houston by 1889. The parish now called Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral was established in 1917, and its church, dedicated in 1918, stood on land that is now Tranquility Park. Its Yoakum Boulevard sanctuary dates from 1952, and it was designated a cathedral in 1967. Middle Eastern immigrants founded the Antiochian parish of St. George in 1928, and in 1954 it bought property on Mercer Street, in the West University area. In 1993 it established a mission, St. Joseph, on Hammerly Boulevard in west Houston.

St. Vladimir Russian Orthodox Church traces to postwar Russian Orthodox immigrants who began meeting in 1949 and 1950. It bought a house for a chapel in 1953 and completed a church on Tidwell Road, in north Houston, in 1988. Later members included immigrants from the Soviet Union and Americans who converted from other denominations. The Romanian Episcopate's St. Mary Magdalene was founded in 1993 and St. Andrew in 2004.
