Orthodox Christianity in Texas

Orthodox Christianity came to Texas with immigrants in the late 1800s, first at Galveston, where Greek fishermen, sailors and merchants joined Serbs and a few Russians and Syrians in 1895 to build Saints Constantine and Helen Orthodox Church. Bishop Nicholas of the Russian Orthodox Church in San Francisco consecrated it in 1896, and by the early 1900s it had come under the Serbian Orthodox Church. In Houston, a Greek parish, now Annunciation, dedicated its church in 1918. Middle Eastern immigrants, who had begun arriving in Texas after 1880, founded the Antiochian parish of St. George in 1928.

Annunciation became a cathedral in 1967, when Houston became the see of a Greek Orthodox diocesan district. St. George later started missions in outer Houston, including St. Joseph in 1993. In Dallas, St. Seraphim Orthodox Cathedral began in April 1954 as the city's first English-speaking Orthodox mission, formed by an Orthodox Mexican community and a Texas-born convert raised Southern Baptist, the future Archbishop Dmitri. In 1958 it joined the North American Metropolia, which became the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) in 1970, and it is now the cathedral of that church's Diocese of the South.

Elder Ephraim of Arizona, formerly abbot of Philotheou Monastery on Mount Athos, founded Holy Archangels Greek Orthodox Monastery in 1996 and St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Monastery in Washington, Texas, in 2004. Archbishop Dmitri blessed the concept of Nativity of Our Lord Orthodox Monastery, an OCA women's community in Kemp, in 2000; it was activated in 2009.
