Saint Basil the Great

Life & Biography
Basil was born into a remarkable Christian family: his grandmother Macrina the Elder, his mother Emmelia, his sister Macrina the Younger, and his brothers Gregory of Nyssa and Peter of Sebaste are all venerated as saints. He studied in Constantinople and Athens alongside his lifelong friend Gregory the Theologian.
After his studies, Basil traveled to Egypt, Palestine, and Syria to learn from the great monastics. He then established his own monastic community in Pontus, writing the Rule that would become the foundation of Eastern monasticism. As Archbishop of Caesarea, he combated Arianism, reorganized the liturgy, and established hospitals and hospices — including the famous Basiliad, a vast complex serving the poor and sick.
His theological writings on the Holy Spirit were decisive in the formulation of Trinitarian doctrine, and his Liturgy is celebrated ten times a year on the most solemn occasions.
Legacy & Impact on Orthodoxy
Basil shaped Orthodox monasticism through his Rule, which remains the basis of communal monastic life in the East. His theological defense of the divinity of the Holy Spirit completed the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed's pneumatology. The Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great is celebrated on the most sacred days of the church year. He is one of the Three Holy Hierarchs.
