Life & Biography
Born Prokhor Moshnin in Kursk, Russia, the young boy fell from a bell tower at age seven and was miraculously unharmed. At age ten, he was healed from a serious illness by the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God. These early experiences shaped his lifelong devotion to the Theotokos.
At nineteen, he entered the Sarov monastery and was tonsured with the name Seraphim ("fiery one"). He spent years in increasing solitude: first as a hermit in the forest, then standing on a rock in prayer for a thousand consecutive nights, and finally in complete enclosure within his cell.
In 1825, following a vision of the Theotokos, he opened his cell to receive visitors. Thousands came from across Russia, and he greeted each one — regardless of season or circumstance — with the words: "My joy! Christ is risen!" He could read hearts, heal the sick, and was often seen surrounded by an unearthly light. His conversation with Motovilov about the acquisition of the Holy Spirit is one of the most important spiritual texts in Orthodoxy.

Saint Seraphim revitalized Russian spirituality at a time of growing secularism. His teaching that 'the purpose of the Christian life is the acquisition of the Holy Spirit' became a cornerstone of Orthodox spiritual theology. His joy, warmth, and accessibility made holiness tangible to ordinary people and inspired a renewal of elder-based spiritual direction throughout Russia.
