Life & Biography
Sergius (baptized Bartholomew) was born near Rostov to a boyar family impoverished by political upheaval. As a boy, he struggled with his studies until a mysterious monk gave him a piece of blessed bread, after which he could read fluently.
After his parents' death, he withdrew into the forest near Radonezh with his brother Stephen and built a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Stephen soon left, unable to bear the hardships, but Sergius remained alone for years, living among wild animals (a bear became his companion), until disciples gradually gathered around him.
The community he founded grew into the Holy Trinity Lavra, which became the spiritual heart of Russia. Sergius refused all ecclesiastical honors, including the patriarchate of Moscow. His blessing of Prince Dmitry Donskoy before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380 — sending two warrior-monks to fight alongside the army — was a turning point in Russian history, inspiring the nation's liberation from Mongol domination.

The Holy Trinity Lavra he founded remains the most important monastery in Russian Orthodoxy.
