About This Icon

One of the most moving images in Orthodox iconography: Christ after the Crucifixion, head bowed, arms crossed over his chest, standing in (or rising from) the tomb. This icon conflates the burial and the Resurrection, showing Christ in the moment between death and life.

It is used particularly during Holy Week and invites the viewer into contemplation of Christ's voluntary suffering.
