About This Icon

St. George is depicted as a young soldier on a white horse, slaying a dragon with his lance. While the dragon-slaying legend is popular, Orthodox iconography treats it as an allegory of faith conquering evil and paganism.

St. George was a Roman soldier martyred during the Diocletian persecution (c. 303 AD). He is one of the most venerated military saints in Orthodoxy.
