The first Orthodox saint glorified in America, St. Herman (c. 1756–1836) arrived in Alaska in 1794 as part of the first Russian Orthodox mission. He is depicted as an elderly monk with a simple cassock and a gentle expression, often with the Alaskan landscape behind him.
St. Herman devoted his life to serving the native Aleut people, protecting them from exploitation and teaching them the Christian faith with patience and love.
