About This Icon

Christ stands in the Jordan River as John the Baptist baptizes him. The Holy Spirit descends as a dove, and the voice of the Father speaks from heaven: 'This is my beloved Son.' This icon depicts the revelation of the Holy Trinity — the defining event of Theophany.

The waters of the Jordan are often depicted in a cave-like shape, paralleling the cave of the Nativity and the tomb of the Resurrection.
