Orthodox Christianity in Georgia
Greek immigrants began arriving in Atlanta in the late 1800s, and the parish that became the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation dates its founding to September 5, 1905. The congregation bought a Presbyterian church building in 1906, later moved to a former synagogue, and dedicated its Clairmont Road church in 1970, when it was named a cathedral. In Savannah, a Greek parish organized around 1900 was chartered in 1907. As St. Paul's, it bought the Lawton Memorial Building from the city in 1941 and dedicated it in 1943.
In 1995 the diocesan offices for Greek Orthodox churches in the southeastern United States moved to a space adjacent to the Atlanta cathedral. Other Greek parishes include those in Augusta, Macon, Columbus, Marietta, and Cumming. According to the New Georgia Encyclopedia, the state's Orthodox churches are located primarily in metropolitan Atlanta.
St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church in Atlanta was founded by Lebanese and Syrian immigrants. The Serbian parish of Holy Apostles Peter and Paul grew from a small group of Atlanta Serbs who gathered in 1993. St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Church in Norcross, a parish of the Orthodox Church in America, dates to 1976, and its redwood church was dedicated in 1980. The Monastery of the Glorious Ascension in Resaca belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), and its patronal feast is the Ascension of the Lord.
