Orthodox Christianity in Indiana
Greek immigrants had settled in Indianapolis by 1900, and by 1907 a Greek Orthodox congregation was holding services there, served by Nicholas Velonis, a priest from Greece. The congregation incorporated in 1910 and was later named Holy Trinity. In Lake County, the steel towns of East Chicago and Gary attracted immigrants from eastern and southern Europe, and East Chicago's 1940 city directory listed Serbian, Greek, Romanian, and Russian Orthodox churches.
After World War II, many Macedonian families settled in cities with steel mills. The Association of Religion Data Archives names Gary among the first Macedonian centers in America. In Fort Wayne, the Macedonian Patriotic Organization, founded there in 1922, began an effort at the war's end to establish an Eastern Orthodox church, now St. Nicholas Cathedral. St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Cathedral began in Gary in 1964, bought land in Merrillville in 1970, and was proclaimed a cathedral in 1983. The Greek parish Holy Trinity moved to Carmel in 2008 and was elevated to cathedral status in 2018.
The Serbian Orthodox Monastery of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God in New Carlisle was consecrated on June 19, 1994, with Serbian Patriarch Pavle serving the liturgy. For many years it was a stavropegic monastery, under the Serbian Patriarch's direct jurisdiction, and since 2011 it has been under Bishop Longin of New Gracanica and Midwest America.
