Orthodox Churches in Mississippi

A survey of the first Orthodox parish in each state lists a Syrian parish at Vicksburg, dated 1906, as Mississippi's first; in most Southern states the survey found a Greek parish first. St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church traces its beginnings to immigrants from Lebanon and Syria who settled in the area. The parish gives its founding year as 1906, though a 2024 Vicksburg Post feature says 1909.

In Jackson, Holy Trinity-Saint John the Theologian Orthodox Church dates to 1951, when Greek immigrants formed the Patmian and Athenian societies. On the Gulf Coast, many Orthodox worshipers attended services at Keesler Air Force Base under Chaplain Lt. Col. Michael Margatich until 1967, when Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Biloxi was established as a mission chapel of a New Orleans parish. Margatich persuaded the contractor building a new base chapel to give the old building to the Orthodox community, which moved it to its present site. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese chartered the parish in December 1983, and Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta consecrated the church in November 2014.

The state's parishes include congregations of the Antiochian Archdiocese, the Orthodox Church in America and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. St. George describes its membership as drawn from various ethnic backgrounds, with many converts. Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church in McComb, a parish of the Orthodox Church in America, describes a community of converts and "cradle" Orthodox living in the McComb area and beyond.
