Orthodox Christianity in Missouri
According to a state-by-state survey of first churches, Greek immigrants established the first Orthodox parish in Missouri, in St. Louis, in 1904. After a dispute produced a separate church in 1910, the factions came together in 1917 to form the congregation later named St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Its church opened on December 22, 1917, with a hierarchical liturgy celebrated in Greek and Arabic. Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in St. Louis was formally established on August 1, 1909. St. Michael's Orthodox Church, now in the Orthodox Church in America, began that October as a Russian parish. Its members were immigrants from parts of Europe such as Austria-Hungary, Galicia and Russia who had sought work in the mining areas of Illinois and Missouri.
In Kansas City, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church opened its first church building, at 14th and Broadway, in 1912. Today the St. Louis area includes parishes of the Orthodox Church in America, the Antiochian and Greek archdioceses, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and the Serbian and Romanian churches, among them All Saints of North America at Maryland Heights. Elsewhere, congregations include St. Thomas the Apostle at Springfield, Joy of All Who Sorrow at Joplin and St. Luke the Evangelist at Columbia.
Monastic communities include Holy Resurrection Orthodox Monastery at Niangua and the Holy Archangel Michael & All Angels Skete at Weatherby. The skete's website describes a community of three branches, one led by a hieromonk and two by abbesses, with 80 acres of land.
