Orthodox Christianity in New Hampshire
Several of New Hampshire's Orthodox congregations formed as immigrants from Greece and the Russian Empire settled in its cities and mill towns. In Manchester, Father Kaparellis, the first Orthodox priest to celebrate the Divine Liturgy there, visited between 1896 and 1899. The Ecclesiastical Brotherhood of St. George organized in 1905, and in 1907 the community founded the city's first Greek church on property given by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. In 1970 the Church of St. George was consecrated and elevated to the status of Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New Hampshire.
In Newport, where Greek immigrants are believed to have begun settling in the 1890s, most of the first generation came for jobs in shoe shops and mills. St. Vasilios opened there in 1952. In Portsmouth, the first Greek immigrant settled in 1893, and in 1933 the community bought a vacant school and converted it into the first St. Nicholas church. St. Nicholas in Manchester traces its history to 1931 and to immigrants primarily from Kalambaka and Kastraki in the Meteora region.
In Berlin, the Rev. Arcady Piotrowsky arrived in 1915 to establish a church for a community of about 300 Russian men. The building, known locally as "The Russian Church," closed in 1963, reopened in 1974 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Claremont's Holy Resurrection parish, founded in 1909 by Eastern European immigrants, borrowed Berlin's plans for its church, completed in 1941 and added to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2023.
