Orthodox Churches in Yonkers, New York

Lemkos from Galicia began arriving in Yonkers in the 1880s, settling among Rusyns who had come slightly earlier. During the Return to Orthodoxy movement, Orthodox Lemkos left a Byzantine Catholic church and organized Holy Trinity, which built a church on Seymour Street in 1899. After a fire, the parish completed its present church in 1905, and Bishop Tikhon, later Patriarch of All Russia, consecrated it in 1906. Holy Trinity is now part of the Orthodox Church in America. In the 1930s, some parishioners left Holy Trinity to found St. Mary's, a Carpatho-Russian parish that built its present church on North Broadway in 1969.

In the Crestwood neighborhood, St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary bought its present property in 1962. Its Three Hierarchs Chapel, completed in 1983, replaced a smaller chapel built for an Episcopalian congregation, and services there are in English. Virgin Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church, of the Antiochian Archdiocese, spent years building a new church that has since been consecrated.
