Orthodox Churches in Akron, Ohio

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1916 by Akron's Greek community, which grew with the city's industrial economy to about 2,500 by 1918. Its church on South Union Street, near the University of Akron, was dedicated in 1930. Serbian residents incorporated the Serbian Orthodox Church of Akron in 1919; the parish, now St. Demetrius, consecrated a Lake Street church in 1933 and a new complex in Copley Township in 1984. St. Archangel Michael, also Serbian, is on Pickle Road.

Macedono-Bulgarian immigrants founded St. Elia the Prophet in 1946; its founding members had attended the Patronage of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church on South Street, which has since closed. St. Elia, in the Firestone Park area, joined the Orthodox Church in America in 1976 and describes itself as a home for people of various backgrounds. St. Mary Orthodox Church belongs to the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese; in 2017 the parish marked Fr. Myron Zuder's fiftieth anniversary as its pastor.
