Orthodox Christianity in Lorain

Lorain's older Orthodox parishes formed among immigrants who settled in South Lorain, where many worked at the steel mill. A first large group of Serbian immigrants arrived in May 1903, and St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, at East 33rd Street and Grove Avenue, was consecrated in 1929. SS Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, on East 32nd Street, dates to November 30, 1913, when 48 Russian Orthodox gathered in a private home to form a parish.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which marked 100 years as a parish in 2023, worshiped at East 34th Street and Pearl Avenue until a new church opened on Tower Boulevard in 1972. Sts. Cyril & Methodius Orthodox Church formed in 1933 among Bulgarians and Macedonians, many of whom had attended other Orthodox churches in South Lorain, and bought an 1895 building first dedicated as an Episcopal church. That parish counted about 200 families in the 1950s and 1960s but about 50 by 2003.
