Orthodox Christianity in Oklahoma
Orthodox immigrants reached Indian Territory and Oklahoma Territory between 1890 and 1910. The first Orthodox parish in the state was Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Hartshorne, founded in 1897 as a Uniate parish and Russian Orthodox by at least 1906; it now belongs to the Orthodox Church in America. Its original Carpatho-Russian members had come to mine coal in the Choctaw Nation and built the present church in 1917. Membership peaked at seventy-five families, but the Great Depression and the decline of coal mining led many to leave.
In Oklahoma City, Greek residents organized the Greek Society of St. George in 1914 and completed their church in 1922. St. Elijah's parish history records that the first three Orthodox families in the Oklahoma City area, all from Lebanon, settled in 1900, and that a permanent priest arrived in 1920 with the permission of the Patriarch of Antioch. In Tulsa, a multi-ethnic, English-speaking mission formed in 2003 and later established Holy Apostles Orthodox Christian Church in the suburb of Bixby.
The Sacred Monastery of St. Iakovos "New Studion" in Piedmont, near Oklahoma City, belongs to the Georgian Orthodox Church. The community traces its origin to 1982, when Archbishop Iakovos of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese charged its elder with founding a monastery modeled on the Studion in Constantinople. The Georgian patriarch canonically established the community in 2018, and in November 2020 the monks moved into a property formerly owned by Roman Catholic Carmelite nuns.
