Orthodox Christianity in San Antonio

St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church began in 1924, when seventeen founders met on May 29 to organize the Greek community for the purpose of building a church. By June 12 the founding society represented about 50 Greek families. Its founders came from Greece and Asia Minor, and the parish says it now serves many from across the Orthodox world.

St. Anthony the Great (Orthodox Church in America) was organized in 1979 under Fr. Gregory Roth, chaplain at Lackland Air Force Base; its founders included Orthodox civilians who had attended services at the base chapel. In 1982 it bought a former Congregational church just south of downtown near the King William district, designed by Alfred Giles and designated a city historic structure in 1988. Its services are in English. St. Ephraim (Antiochian) is in north-central San Antonio; St. John Cassian is a community of Romanian and American Orthodox Christians; and Sts. Joachim and Anna (Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia) began as a mission in 2012.
