Orthodox Christianity in Washington
Orthodox parishes were organized in Washington by the 1890s. The missionary Sebastian Dabovich celebrated St. Spiridon's first service in Seattle on September 18, 1895, for Greek, Russian and Serb immigrants. Tsar Nicholas II contributed funds to the church's remodeling in 1901. A parish followed in July 1896 at the coal-mining town of Wilkeson, under the Russian Orthodox Church's Bishop Nicholas of the Aleutians and Alaska, and in 1900 Bishop Tikhon described its first parishioners as Arabs, Greeks and Slavs. Seattle had about 2,000 Greeks by 1915, who formed a separate congregation in 1918.
Antiochian, Greek Orthodox and Orthodox Church in America parishes are found from the Seattle suburbs to Spokane, alongside Russian, Romanian and Serbian communities. Seattle's cathedrals include St. Spiridon, which built a new church in 1941 and was designated a cathedral; St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral, founded in 1932 by Russian immigrants, many of them naval officers under the tsar; and St. Nectarios American Orthodox Cathedral, started in 1968 by Father Neketas Palassis and some parishioners of a Greek Orthodox church.
Wilkeson's Holy Trinity temple is listed on the National and State historic registers. Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Tacoma, which began at Wilkeson, started a monthly Slavonic liturgy for Slavic immigrants in 2005. St. Nicholas Cathedral keeps a chapel in the room where St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco died in 1966. All-Merciful Saviour Monastery on Vashon Island, established in 1986, receives pilgrims; its diocese reported hundreds of visitors a month in 2016.
