Orthodox Christianity in Wyoming
A state-by-state survey of first Orthodox parishes lists Wyoming's earliest as a Greek congregation in Cheyenne in 1922. The Rev. T. V. Koch, formerly of Colorado, came to Rock Springs in August 1924 at the request of Orthodox residents who had no church. The Union Pacific Coal Company donated the ground for a church, Protestants of other denominations contributed money, and the church was dedicated in 1925.
News reports of the 1925 dedication gave the church's membership as sixty-one Slavic and forty-seven Greek, and a later account lists Russians, Serbians, Montenegrins, Bulgarians, and Romanians among its congregation. By October 1927 the Greek Orthodox Church had bought the Rainbow Avenue building from the Eastern Orthodox congregation, and that month Bishop Kalistos dedicated it, with services announced in both Greek and English. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Rock Springs says 2027 will mark its 100th year in the community.
The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver now lists parishes in Casper, Cheyenne, and Rock Springs, and a chapel in Worland served by Cheyenne clergy. Holy Resurrection in Gillette is an Antiochian parish. In 2013 a new Cheyenne parish, now Holy Apostles on Hynds Boulevard, broke ground. Its members came mainly from Saints Constantine & Helen, and the Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported it as the city's first new Orthodox parish in 80 years. Its parish president said one reason for founding it was to attract more members, noting that the Orthodox faith had historically come to America more from an ethnic background.
