Orthodox Christianity in Colorado
Orthodoxy came to Colorado with immigrant industrial workers. In 1898 Carpatho-Rusyn smelter workers in north Denver founded a Greek Catholic parish, Holy Transfiguration. Its members petitioned Bishop Tikhon of the Russian mission for reception into Orthodoxy; he granted the request on June 15, 1903, and consecrated the church in 1905. Slavic immigrants opened parishes in Pueblo in 1903 and Calhan in 1905, and Greeks founded churches in Denver and Pueblo between 1906 and 1909.
In the early 1970s Holy Transfiguration, its neighborhood cut by interstate highways, voted to relocate, but the move fell through. Parishioners who favored relocating eventually formed a mission under the patronage of St. Herman of Alaska in Littleton. The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver, a diocese established in 1979, spans the western mountain and central plains states, and its cathedral, the Assumption of the Theotokos, is in Denver. Holy Transfiguration of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, as that parish is now named, became a diocesan cathedral in 1988, recognized as the mother church of Orthodoxy in Colorado. It also drew immigrants from Romania, Russia, Serbia and Bulgaria after 1990. In 1991 the Antiochian Archdiocese, which encouraged a Western Rite, received St. Mark's, a Denver parish founded in 1875 as an Anglican church.
The Protection of the Holy Virgin Orthodox Monastery, a women's monastic community in the Orthodox Church in America, was founded in 1993. The sisters rented a house in Calhan before buying property west of Pikes Peak in 1995. Its new church was consecrated in August 2022.
