Orthodox Churches in Youngstown, Ohio

Steel-mill jobs drew immigrants to Youngstown in the early 1900s. Romanians held their first Liturgy there on February 4, 1906, and 82 men organized the city's first Romanian parish. That parish, now Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church, occupies an 1881 stone mansion on Wick Avenue, converted and finished as a church in 1946, with services in English and Romanian.

Greeks met on December 5, 1915, to organize St. John the Forerunner, the first Greek Orthodox church in Youngstown. St. Nicholas, on Walnut Street, followed soon afterward amid the Royalist and Venizelist rivalry in Greece. Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, founded in 1924 out of small house-church gatherings, bought property on the West Side. The Serbian Holy Trinity church on Laird Avenue was consecrated by Bishop Mardarije of Libertyville, and the parish expects to mark the church's centennial in 2029. Holy Ghost, a Macedono-Bulgarian parish, was founded in 1936.
